How can we help customers using the legacy website builder migrate their content over to the new website builder product?
The sunset of the legacy GoDaddy website builder product meant that 133K customers still subscribed to the product would be notified and prompted to transition to the latest version of the website builder.
The project required a tight timeline – about one week for designs and one week for testing and iterating. This time constraint challenged us to crisply define the scope for a V1 implementation.
I worked in close collaboration with the PM to brainstorm some initial designs in Excalidraw. The goal was to provide a simple UI that still provided value, but could be released early on so that customers could begin migrating content while a V2 was in the works.
We landed on an idea we called the "Importer Panel" where customers could use click-to-copy functionality to copy text from their old site and paste into their new site.
I created a prototype in CodeSandbox that was used for unmoderated usability testing on usertesting.com. I wanted to gauge the discoverability and level of ease of copying text from the Importer Panel onto the appropriate page/section on the new site. Creating an interactive prototype enabled us to see if participants could successfully copy and paste the text and learn how they felt about frequently repeating the action.
Ultimately, the feedback on the prototype was positive; participants successfully copied and pasted text from the old site onto the new site, and several participants expressed the value of having even the basic implementation of the tool.
I partnered with one other teammate to create the components comprising the Importer Panel and its accessory modals/tooltips. In V2, the content will automatically be migrated to the new site and customers can focus on design details.
